Men’s and women’s tennis victorious over the weekend

The Cardinals came through in the 11th inning to steal away a 3-2 win over the Butler baseball team on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (4-12) jumped on the scoreboard early. Sophomore Jason Jamerson led off the second with a single, followed by junior Alex Montagano’s walk, to set up freshman Michael Letzter’s liner up the middle to bring home Jamerson and give the team a 1-0 advantage. The men’s tennis team continued its hot streak Wednesday, defeating host Dayton 5-2 to pick up its sixth consecutive win.

The team hosts Indiana State on Friday at 3 p.m. The baseball team won its fourth in the last five games after defeating visiting IPFW 5-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Sophomore Jason Jamerson’s clutch single scored senior Kyle McLaughlin from second base.

Two innings prior, Butler (4-11) had rallied back from a 4-2 deficit. McLaughlin led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error. The baseball team was back in action this past weekend after inclement weather canceled games earlier in the week.

Butler (3-11, 2-1) took full advantage of its first conference series against visiting Youngstown State, taking the first two games of the three-game series, before losing in the finale.

The men’s tennis team (6-9) won its matches on Friday over visiting locals IPFW 6-1 and IUPUI 5-2.

Senior Eric Breitenbach and freshman Chris Herron set the tone in the opener, winning 8-4 at No. 1 doubles; and sophomore Ben Raynauld and freshman Bryce Warren added an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Bulldogs dominated singles play as well, as Raynauld, Breitenbach, Warren and freshman Brandon Bayliss all notched victories.

The team carried the momentum into the next match against IUPUI. Breitenbach and Herron and Raynauld and Bayliss again claimed doubles wins.

Bayliss won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Raynauld and Herron also posted wins, while sophomore Ben Shafer added a No. 6 singles win.

On the women’s side, the Bulldogs (7-7) got back to .500 with a 5-2 win over host Evansville on Friday.

The No. 1 doubles team of freshmen Natali Jaimes and Gabriella Bobrowski got things going with an 8-6 win, while seniors Tiffany McLoughlin and Michelle Hawes added an 8-1 win at No. 3.

Butler had to come from behind for the singles win, as Evansville had taken the first two games at No. 1 and No. 2. Bobrowski picked up the No. 3 win, Jenkins the No. 4 and McLoughlin and Hawes rounded out the team for the victory.

The women’s team returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Wright State for a match at 10 a.m.

The men’s team plays at Dayton on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
