McCain and McDreamy

Now that the writers are no longer on strike and all our favorite shows are going to be back on television for our viewing enjoyment, I feel like the 2008 Presidential election is going to fall to the back burner. I mean, what would we rather watch play out on our television sets -- the saga of Sen. John McCain’s lobbyist sex scandal (really what is a campaign without an apparent sex scandal) or the romantic trysts of the doctors at Seattle Grace? Hmmm… McCain or McDreamy… it’s a tough call.
I feel like there is both a positive and negative to the end of the writer’s strike affecting people’s interest/willingness to tune in to debates and coverage of the 2008 election.
First of all, this could be a good thing because I’m sure that many people, like myself, are experiencing a little bit of election fatigue. The past couple of months watching this drama unfold has been pretty thrilling. Seeing what sort of attacks would come out, what sort of skeletons opposing candidates could pull out of one another’s closets has been great. However, I am now starting to feel like I am hanging in political limbo.
I know that McCain pretty much has sealed the deal for the GOP side, but the Democrats are slowly slaying me with the never ending primary election. It’s about time to get behind one candidate now. Interparty bickering cannot be good for a national election.
Also, this constant bombardment of every detail of this election is bound to be tiring after a while -- and we still have to go all the way to November! Other things to distract us from political talk, such as discussing the plotlines of our favorite televisions dramas will provide a nice little break so we can rest up for when the race really gets hot again in September/October.
However, there is a negative side to people turning away from political chat. Good debate and information sharing is definitely refreshing to see. It has been good to see people getting interested in politics again, to get people paying attention after we have been stagnating and frustrated for such a long time.
Hopefully, even though there is now some great drama at Seattle Grace to distract us from the drama of John McCain’s sex life, political discussion and enthusiasm won’t go to the wayside.
McCain and McDreamy! Let’s have our cake and eat it too!
