A hard fought rally just wasn’t enough as the women’s basketball team suffered a 67-64 loss to Loyola on Saturday.

Butler (15-7, 5-6) was down 59-46 with less than 10 minutes remaining when the comeback attempt began. An 18-4 run was keyed by freshman Azjah Bass’ 3-pointer that gave the Bulldogs a 64-63 lead with 2:07 to go. Starting off a game 8-for-29 from the field and 1-for-15 from behind the arc is never the ideal situation.

However, like most high-ranking teams, the Bulldogs (21-2, 10-2) eventually found their rhythm to secure a 62-57 Horizon League victory. The men’s and women’s track teams produced solid performances and personal best times at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday. A 3-pointer from Pete Campbell with 15 seconds left gave Butler its first lead (70-68) in its victory over a very poised Valparaiso squad last night. It turned out that was all they needed, after a Willie Veasley steal and free throw finished off the Crusaders 71-68. Sophomore Susan Lester and junior Lade Akande led the women’s basketball team to an impressive 63-48 win over visiting Youngstown State on Saturday. For the second straight match the Butler tennis team failed to win a point as they fell 6-0 to No. 48 Kentucky. Three Butler fouls with less than a minute left proved to be very costly, as the women’s basketball team fell to visiting Cleveland State 65-61 on Thursday.

Senior distance runner Kent Wories, in his first meet since Jan. 19, notched a career best time of 15:05.80 in the men’s 5,000 meter run at the IU Relays, while senior Sarah Kemple clocked in at 18:22.45 in her 5,000 meter to place 14th. Wories placed sixth in the non-scoring meet held at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind. last Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Matt Lawder ran to impress with his eighth place finish in the 5,000 meter, ending the race with a noteworthy time of 15:10.23.

IU junior and Carmel-native Evan Bardach was the 800 meter finals winner with a time of 1:53.33, and IU freshman and Indianapolis-native Todd Leone’s time of 1:20.75 in the 600 meter was a career best.

Butler will run with IU standouts again at the Meyo Invite held at the University of Notre Dame, and will also compete at the DePauw Invitational this weekend on Feb. 8-9.
