Butler was ranked among the top three pharmacy schools in the nation according to the results of the North American Pharmacy Licensing Exam, or NAPLEX.

The Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science is holding a poster contest to celebrate women’s history month in March. The department will be accepting posters featuring famous mathematicians or any topic involving women in mathematics.

On Feb. 5, tornadoes ripped through the campus of Union University in Jackson, Tenn. The tornadoes rolled over university dormitories and buildings leaving only wreckage.
The storms in Tennessee raise the question, is Butler’s campus prepared to deal with such a disaster? Although not every major in the journalism department requires an internship to graduate, Butler does offer class credit for approved internships and encourages them as an introduction into the professional world. The itinerary for the three Butler provost candidates last week allowed students, faculty and staff an opportunity to meet with the provost applicants. Butler University’s Health Center and Peers Advocating Wellness for Students (PAWS) are working together to educate students about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) with ‘the HPV Initiative.’ Acceptance of diversity begins and ends with the individual, Herman Boone said at Butler University’s Krannert Room in Clowes Hall on Thursday night.
The former football coach, portrayed by actor Denzel Washington in the 2000 film “Remember the Titans”, spoke about the importance of accepting diversity as Butler’s R.E.A.C.H. (Respecting, Embracing & Achieving Community Harmony) Week came to a close. A new Butler student organization was approved at the Jan. 30 SGA meeting to much applause from the assembly.
The Muslim Student Association was proposed to increase Muslim awareness on the Butler campus.
“Bulldogs: We Got Our Head in The Game,” (a take off of Disney Channel’s “High School Musical”) will be the 2008 theme for the week of Feb.18-23. Pairings were announced and detailed packets with activities will be out this week. The question “Is India Still a Secular Country?” does not have a simple answer. In a seminar sponsored by Butler’s Center for Faith and Vocation, a panel of experts attempted to answer that question last Wednesday evening. Butler professor Dr. Marvin B. Scott has accumulated a long list of accomplishments over the course of his life, making him a prominent figure not only in the Butler-Indianapolis community but also throughout the country. His most recent accomplishment only strengthens this position.
The NAPLEX is an exam administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. A passing mark on this exam is required to get a pharmacy license.
408 Butler pharmacy graduates have taken the NAPLEX and have achieved better than a 99 percent rate of success in the past five years, stated a recent press release.
“This shows our students are very well prepared and do take it seriously,” Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Bonnie Brown concluded about the test. Pharmacy students at Butler go through a highly acclaimed program that features a two year pre-professional course study followed by four years of professional training.
Senior pharmacy major Stephanie Reynolds, who is in her second year of professional training, stated that she is becoming well prepared to take the NAPLEX.
One thing Stephanie pointed out was Care Plans. “Care Plans implement what you learn in class to a real patient,” said Reynolds.
The Care Plans are introduced in the second year of professional training. It involves small groups of students, who evaluate a patient’s therapy and come up with their own plan of therapy. They also discuss patient counseling.
The course load is not the only thing yielding high achievement though. “We have a very well-trained faculty, very qualified,” said Brown. Brown explained the pharmacy faculty at Butler are not only well-trained and qualified, but some are currently practicing as well. This helps the students get an idea of what they will be working with in their future careers.
“They really are trying to prepare us,” Reynolds said.
With this preparation, Butler pharmacy graduates are able to maintain an above national average passing rate for the NAPLEX as well as 100 percent job placement rate.
