Butler professor Dr. Marvin B. Scott has accumulated a long list of accomplishments over the course of his life, making him a prominent figure not only in the Butler-Indianapolis community but also throughout the country. His most recent accomplishment only strengthens this position.
Scott has been nominated by President Bush to the National Council on the Humanities, a body that advises the National Endowment for the Humanities on issuing grants to cultural and academic projects. He has accepted and will reside on the board until Jan. 26, 2010.
Scott’s accomplishments made him a perfect candidate for the U.S. President’s nomination. He holds a degree in psychology from Johnson S. Smith University, both a master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh, and an Honorary Doctorate of Law from Martin University. He also completed a year of study at the University of Allahabad (India).
Those degrees led him toward high-ranking positions within St. Paul’s College and Boston University. Beyond the classroom, Scott has given his talents to the Lilly Endowment, the Boy Scouts of America, five federal desegregation cases, the Governor of Indiana, the Board of Regents for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and multiple U.S. Congressional elections for the Republican Party.
The impressive list above is only the tip of the iceberg. Scott also has a successful family life with his wife Dr. Dulce Maria Scott. They have four children: Robert (Naval Academy/Morehouse), Cinda (University of Miami), Alex Costa (Butler), and Marvin Jr. (Sycamore School).
Sycamore School, a PreK-8th grade school for gifted and talented students, is located only minutes from Butler and holds a special place in this writer’s academic past and heart. The school frequently interacts with Butler, and Scott has become well-respected at Sycamore through interaction and his youngest son.
Scott was unavailable for comment on his goals and aspirations for the position.
